This is like a treasure hunt. I am working on Vizcaya Museum Shop products based on the Stone Barge and I needed better images. Time and storms have done a number on the limestone carvings. I was given a report by the assistant curator that mentioned an article written by Alexander Stirling Calder, the sculptor of the barge, entitled "The Relation of Sculture to Architecture" in: The American Architect 118 (December 8, 1920). I actually found a copy on the internet! These are the "Four Gaines", also called herms, caryatids or "Vizcayads". More about herms, carytids, Vizcayads and Stirling Calder in upcoming blogs.
